Stating the obvious: oldos.org is dead. It's very obvious, but I wanted to state it for posterity: The website hasn't been updated in two years, new forum registrations have been disabled due to spam. Hopefully the information here is still useful to some of you out there, but don't expect updates or new content. I no longer have the time or desire to play with old computers or run a website related to them. If someone wants to submit content, please email me and I'll find the time to pop it up here, but otherwise, consider us dead. Thank you to everyone who's visited, been a poster on the forum, helped the site run, and everything of that nature for the last 8 years. I know from the stats there's still quite a few of you who read the site, and I'm grateful to those of you who are coming for the first time too, and I'm sorry to have left you with such old, outdated content.

Liveblogging from LISA '07 **Keynote**The keynote wasn't good at all. I'm highly disappointed that a group as big as USENIX couldn't get a better keynote speaker. They started out with lots of A/V problems, and I would've preffered just listening to the feedback. I left about 30 minutes in, but on IRC people were starting to play "buzzword bingo" because of how terrible the presentation was. I sure hope the next presentations are a lot better.

Cube Ploy?I come back from lunch today (er, foosball) to find an awesome sight -- my co-workers had screwed an extra cube wall into my setup, giving me a full square. So, what do I do? Climb in and get to work! I told everyone that I would get my office someday! Photos here: Cube Photos.

Yaay!Merry Christmas, all. I had a good Christmas, and am now one iPod richer. The stuff that was going on in November is over now. Just about every 6 months I have to have a hard breakdown for a day or two to make up for my amazing sanity the rest of the year :).

Who? Where? What? This is something I wrote several years ago... I'm going through a hard time in my life, and it helped me reading it again. Maybe someone will see it here and be helped as well. I am the man who stands for his friends... but who will stand for me? I am the man who refuses to play people... but why am I always being played? I am the man who loves all... but not many try to love me. I am the man who will be your closest friend... but yet you remain my bitter enemy. I am the protector of all those around me.. but who will take on the task of protecting me? Where are the few who are willing to stand up? Where are the few who are willing to be true? Where are the few who are willing to love? Where are the few who are willing to be a true friend? Where are the few who are willing to protect? What do I want? I don't want to stand up for those who won't stand up for me. I don't want to be true to those who lie to me. I don't want to love those who will not love me. I don't want to be a friend to those who will not be a friend to me. But what do I do? I continue to put my heart out on a limb for those who hurt me I continue to be true to all those who refuse to be true to me I continue to love those who don't even love themselves I continue to make myself vulnerable... but what is my return? Pain... betrayal... anger... I am who I am... nothing will ever change that... I will not be knocked out. So you might as well not try. I sit here in anguish not because of the actions of one, but the actions of many But do all cause pain? No. There are those like me... but they suffer as well. Is there an ultimate reward? Will all that I'm missing now be repayed? Maybe. God loves me? Jesus loves me? That is no consolation to me now. As another tear falls, heaven remains a thousand miles away. So I remain here asking... Why do I continue? Where are those who will be real? What will remain after you hurt me again?

Moving hosts, spam issues on forumOldOs will be moving hosts soon. I will be cancelling our account with Linode and we will start hosting with Cerient, a local company in Raleigh. I've cleared the linode ads and replaced them with either nothing or google ads. I also took some time to install a couple of mods that should lower the amount of spam on the forums. It's been a big issue, and I'm trying to make it better. Bear with me :).

We aren't dead, I promiseHey guys, I just wanted to let you know that the site isn't dead. I've been extremely busy with work and haven't had time to do any updates. Check out the forum for any information you might need, and I'll try to start piping out the content again before the end of the year.

Here come the conspiracy theories...Let me preface this rant by saying I'm a registered Libertarian, typically I vote Republican, and I consider myself fairly conservative. Well, I was listening to a conservative talk radio show Friday, and they were talking about the recent court decision that the NSA Wiretaps are unconstitutional. They were berating the NY & LA Times reporters who leaked information about the wiretapping, even though the administration asked them not to. Well, I've got news for you, $conservativefigurehead, these reporters are *heroes*. The NSA was doing something blatantly unconstitutional, and they exposed it. That's what the media is SUPPOSED to do. As many times as they screw up, you're going to mess with them about /this/? It makes no sense at all. Kudos to the NY Times for preserving a few more freedoms. Sean Hannidy, Rush Limbaugh and the like? I just lost a little respect for you guys.

Library Researchers FTWFor those of you who think the library is dead, CNet has some news for you. Apparently, researchers at the NYC library are available by phone to answer questions of any kind. Almost like a human search engine. Pretty freakin' sweet if you ask me.

Blaming the internet for bad parenting...A recent article in The Detroit News details how a teenage girl snuck away to the Middle East with a guy she met on MySpace. The thing that burns me about this story is that several places have spun this story to say MySpace is bad. It's not. It's a tool. If you don't want your daughter sneaking off to the West Bank, be a parent instead of crowing away at the internet.

Dell to carry AMD in desktopsIt has been reported that PC manufacturer, Dell, could be carrying AMD processors in their desktop machines as early as September. Sources have been speculating this for some time now, both with the acquisition of Alienware, and also following the announcement of AMD-powered servers. My blog, Kilo Bits Technology News, has the full coverage on this development, and will be updated once more information is released.

WGA Notifications - More InfoKeeping with the topic of WGA Notifications, my new technology blog, Kilo Bits, has written on the topic, providing a full breakdown of Microsoft's anti-piracy measures from 2001 up to the present time. Over the course of the past five years, Microsoft has made attempts to crack down on software piracy, namely the piracy of their own products. This is understandable, considering that Microsoft owns a staggering amount of the PC market between the Windows OS and Office suite, which is also available for the Macintosh platform, but how far is too far?

Microsoft WGA Notificaton deceptive, according to ZDNetA new blog out of ZDNet calls Microsoft's new WGA Notifier tool "shoddy". They go through the process of showing how Microsoft misleads their users into thinking the tool is an important security update, on through vague descriptions of what the tool actually does. I think it's important for Old Os members to be aware that this new notifier tool is *not* a critical update, and that you should not install it if you want to keep a tight audit on the privacy and security of your computer. Edit: For your technical pleasure, I added an article: WGA Workaround, that tells you how to disable WGA Notifier, and remove it from your system.
